SANGAT

“The string quartet has been the prime basic factor of my entire musical philosophy”, said Mehli Mehta, a very long time ago, and it is the chamber music that he spoke of, the very soul of western classical music, that is the heart of the Sangat Chamber Music Festival.

Sangat was a simple idea fuelled by the enthusiasm of Mehroo Jeejeebhoy – Founder Trustee of the MMMF, and Harvey and Ralph DeSouza, both accomplished and successful musicians in London. It was a coming together of musicians of Indian origin with extraordinary musicians from different parts of the world, interacting with local musicians, music students and teachers.

Over 16 years the Festival has grown, experimented and reinvented itself, meeting the changing needs of the visiting musicians, music students, teachers and audiences in Mumbai. The festival is held in December each year and has a spirit that is hard to describe – intense, energetic and innovative.

The Sangat Chamber Music Festival was launched in 1996. Over the years internationally acclaimed musicians from Europe, the United States and the Far East have participated in the Festival.
